Oregon has a strong history of progressive city planning, focusing on alternative methods of transportation, environmental consciousness, and in general trying to create a sustainable, livable society. The original Riverfront for People group was founded in July of 1969, with the goal of removing the six-lane Harbor Drive from the West side of the Willamette. This effort resulted in the destruction of the freeway and the construction of Waterfront Park, one of Portland's most beautiful community spaces.
